Description
Historical spider farm. Women working on a 19th century spider farm. Spider silk is immensely strong and would be of great benefit to the materials industry if it could be gathered effectively. The first attempts at farming weaving spiders were carried out in Madagascar in the 19th century. The large frames seen here allow the spiders to keep their territoriality to prevent them from attacking each other. At the bottom of the frames are fragrant plants to attract insects to the webs as food.
